International IDEA Secretary-General serves as vice-chair of Club de Madrid's first Global Commission on Democracy and Emergencies

June 02, 2021

How can democracies better act when facing future health crises?

Covid-19 erupted in the context of a crisis of democracy long in the making. In most countries, the pandemic and its management by authorities has cast a spotlight on previously unnoticed or insufficiently attended systemic flaws that have limited democracy's capacity to function, deliver, be trusted and come out of the crisis unscathed. Seeking to analyse and remedy these flaws, Club de Madrid has launched a Global Commission on Democracy and Emergencies.

The Commission, an initiative that counts with the financial support of Fundación ACS, and the valuable input of International IDEA and Oxfam International as knowledge partners, aims to formulate recommendations for the emergency situation and  the recovery period ahead,  focusing on those issues which, if left unattended, could be most destabilizing for democratic systems.

Yves Leterme, former Prime Minister of Belgium, chaired the Global Commission, with Aminata Touré, former Prime Minister of Senegal, and Kevin Casas-Zamora, Secretary General of International IDEA as Vice-chairs.
