The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), in partnership with the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and with support from the European Union, organised a week-long project management training for thirty-five (35) NHRC Commissioners and staff. This event took place from July 7th to 10th, 2025, at the Bakadaji Hotel.
The training aimed to enhance the capacity of NHRC personnel in effectively planning, executing, and monitoring human rights-related projects. Key modules covered included Project Planning, Resource Mobilization, Proposal and Concept Development, and Monitoring & Evaluation.
In her closing remarks, Mrs. Jainaba Faye, Head of the International IDEA Country Office, underscored the transformative power of effective project management in advancing human rights.
“The projects you will lead, whether advocating for marginalized communities, promoting access to justice, or safeguarding fundamental freedoms, have the power to transform lives. Project management is not just about meeting deadlines or staying within budget; it’s about turning visions of a more just and equitable world into reality," she said.
She added that every well-executed project amplifies the voices of those served and reinforces the principles of human dignity.
Mr. Raphaël Brigandi, Deputy Head of the EU Delegation to The Gambia, highlighted the strategic importance of the training.
“This investment in your skills is not an end, but a step forward, and I am confident you will take the lessons learned back to your work and continue to promote professionalism, transparency, and impact.” He stated.
He emphasized the EU’s commitment—through the EU-funded CODE Project and in partnership with International IDEA—to strengthening the NHRC’s capacity to deliver strategic results, grounded in human rights principles, and responsive to the needs of Gambian citizens. He also commended the NHRC’s role in fostering a culture of human rights in The Gambia.
Mr. Emmanuel Daniel Joof, Chairperson of the NHRC, described the training as both enriching and timely.
“This training has been more than a learning experience; it has fostered collaboration, self-reflection, and collective growth. It reminded us of the crucial role project management plays in achieving our strategic goals,” he said.
He encouraged participants to apply the knowledge gained to strengthen day-to-day operations and ensure the efficient and impactful implementation of NHRC projects. Chairman Joof further extended his sincere gratitude to the European Union and International IDEA for their continued support in building the Commission’s institutional capacity.
