International IDEA To Put Civil Society Front and Center at UN IDD event

September 15, 2015

Given recent actions by some countries to hamper the efforts of civil society actors, this 15th of September provides a crucial opportunity to highlight the key role that a strong civil society plays in fostering democratic institutions. That is why International IDEA will be hosting an International Day of Democracy event at UN Headquarters on fostering space for a robust civil society throughout the globe.

The event will kick off with a video message from UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. This will be followed by representatives from event co-sponsors Bhutan, Chile, Poland, Sierra Leone and Sweden coming together with International IDEA and civil society members to underline the growing importance of ensuring space for civil society in an increasingly volatile world.

With the sustainable development summit fast approaching at the end of the month, UN agencies, countries from all regions, and diverse civil society reps alike are in agreement that civil society actors of all kinds will be a deciding factor in the efficient, effective and full implementation of the agenda.

To follow the proceedings from afar, the event will be live-tweeted by New York Office Communications Officer Stephen Graf @GrafStephen.
