Media Training on Constitutional Issues and Debates

Date
13 November 2018 - 16 November 2018
Time
9:00 AM to 4:00 PM
Location
Yangon, Myanmar

A four-day intensive course on constitutional issues titled: "The Media Training on Constitutional Issues and Debates" is aimed at Myanmar journalists. This course is demand driven and organized in response to journalist participants in the June 2018 International IDEA Constitution Academy, held in Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar.

At the Constitution Academy, those participants representing the media sector designed a plan for journalists to be trained on concepts of constitutionalism and constitution-building processes. These journalists saw the need for them to strengthen their constitutional knowledge in order to more effectively report on constitutional issues and the future constitutional reform process in Myanmar. Encouraging and capacitating journalists to better cover constitutional issues in the media will also contribute to depoliticizing understandings of some of these issues as well as fostering more evidence-based public consideration of issues. Journalists will be trained on four key issues: constitutional amendment, resource sharing, citizenship and ethnic citizenship. The training will be organized in collaboration with the Yangon Journalism School (YJS). Together with international experts from International IDEA, the trainers from YJS, and several local experts will facilitate the sessions.
