Date
29 April 2015 - 30 April 2015
Location
Vienna, Austria, OSCE Secretariat

To discuss the role of Regional Organisations in conflict prevention and peacebuilding International IDEA, GPPAC, UNU-CRIS, the OAS and OSCE  organized the International Conference on Strengthening Peace and Security Cooperation towards Democracy and Development.

The conference, organized in the framework of the Inter-Regional Dialogue on Democracy, contributed to the policy discussions on the need to strengthen co-operation and co-ordination between the UN, regional organizations and civil society in responding to crises and peace-building. The Conference brought together over 60 experts and practitioners to discuss the root causes of conflicts in their regions, and their role in building strong and inclusive democratic institutions.

The Conference highlighted how the UN Security Council needs support to respond quickly and effectively to every crisis situation. It was noted that regional organizations and civil society organizations often have the means and understanding to help prevent the root causes of conflict in their regions and to build strong and inclusive democratic institutions.

The conference’s recommendations have been presented to the High-Level Thematic Debate of the UN General Assembly on “Strengthening Cooperation between the United Nations and Regional and Sub-regional organizations”, which will take place on 4 May 2015 at UN Headquarters in New York.
