The celebration of International Women’s Day 2026 offers a strategic moment to strengthen both reflection and action on women’s rights, access to justice, and their meaningful participation in decision-making processes.

In Gabon, this year’s commemoration, under the theme “Law, Justice, and Action,” resonates deeply with the country’s post-transition momentum. As democratic institutions consolidate and reforms take roots, the Day provides a timely platform to translate constitutional principles into practical outcomes for women and girls.

Following the conclusion of the political transition, Gabon has entered a new institutional phase that saw the restoration of constitutional order, the installation of elected institutions, and the consolidation of democratic milestones. This post-transition period opens a decisive chapter focused on political stabilization, the strengthening of the rule of law, and the effective implementation of the reforms undertaken.

The presidential and legislative elections held at the end of the transition constituted a pivotal moment in redefining democratic governance and national priorities. They also highlighted the importance of sustaining progress toward inclusive political participation, particularly for women.

Within this new framework, Gabonese women remain central actors in the country’s social, economic, and political life and yet continue to face persistent challenges in ensuring equal political representation, securing effective access to justice and integrating gender perspectives into public policies.

Women parliamentarians, now invested with electoral legitimacy, hold a strategic position in translating post-transition commitments into concrete legislative action. Their leadership is essential to ensuring that institutional reforms fully benefit women and girls across the country.

In this context, the Parliament of the Gabonese Republic, in collaboration with International IDEA and with the support of the European Union, is organizing a dedicated workshop on parliamentary action for gender equality as part of the 2026 International Women’s Day activities. The workshop is to foster collective reflection on the structural challenges that continue to affect women’s full participation and protection.

The training workshop will bring together 80 participants, including:

  • Women Members of Parliament and Senators
  • Representatives of parliamentary committees
  • Legal experts and gender specialists

The workshop will adopt a participatory approach combining:

  • Thematic presentations
  • Group work sessions
  • Experience sharing
  • Interactive discussions

Through this initiative, stakeholders aim to reinforce parliamentary capacities and foster a coordinated, strategic approach to advancing gender equality within Gabon’s evolving democratic framework.

This initiative is part of the 'Support to participatory, inclusive and human rights-based constitutional and institutional reforms to contribute to rapid return to a sustainable constitutional order and prevent electoral violence in Gabon' (DEMGAB) project, funded by the European Union.
