Eritrea gotits independence from Ethiopia in 1993. Since that time, there have been noelections held in the country. Eritrea is a one-party state. The Eritrean constitution, ratified in1997, provides for an elected National Assembly. The constitution has notformally been applied in practice, although it is used as the basis forlegislation.
