Even though the Electoral Law establishes an electoral system, the elections scheduled for December 2001 have been postponed indefinitely. There has never been an election since the young nation got its independence in 1993. However, local elections continue to take place, with the latest being held in May 2003. According To Freedom House, all voting for local public office has been conducted in town meeting-style sessions presided over by PFDJ cadres. PFDJ stands for People’s Front for Democracy and Justice, the ruling party in Eritrea
