Trinidad and Tobago

General Elections, 10 August 2020

Tropical Storm Gonzalo affected Trinidad and Tobago on 25 July 2020, bringing brief periods of heavy rainfall, strong winds, and high tides as the country was placed under an orange weather alert. The storm caused localized street flooding, fallen trees, but no widespread destruction or serious injuries (Trinidad and Tobago Weather Centre 2020).

Impact on electoral processes

During the passage of Tropical Storm Gonzalo political parties in Trinidad and Tobago suspended election campaign activities, which led to the cancellation of rallies, walkabouts, meetings, and other in-person events (Tack 2020).

Major political parties, including the People’s National Movement (PNM) and the United National Congress (UNC), publicly announced pauses in their campaign schedules and advised supporters to prioritize safety. Smaller parties also cancelled planned field activities, though some continued limited online or administrative work. Campaigning for the 10 August 2020 General Elections resumed after weather conditions improved and alerts were lifted (Tack 2020).
