Floods

Severe monsoon floods in Punjab in 2025 caused widespread damage to infrastructure and residents. All 23 districts in the region of Punjab were affected. Based on the 11 September 2024 report, the floods resulted in 48 casualties, almost 400 thousand displaced persons and 97 destroyed homes (Sphere India 2025). The agricultural sector sustained enormous damage, as this disaster happened weeks before the harvest (Mondal 2025). 176 thousand hectares of farmland were submerged. Additionally, more than 250 thousand livestock and more than 500 thousand poultry birds were affected by the floods (Sphere India 2025). The state government pledged to provide compensation for the losses but the farmers felt the disaster has pushed them back by a decade (Mishra 2025). 

Impact on the electoral process  

The Punjab zila parishad and panchayat samiti elections, local district councils originally scheduled for 31 May 2025 (at the latest), were postponed twice: first due to assembly by‑polls (as this would have overstretched the State Election Commission’s resources), and then because of floods (New Times of India 2025).The elections were finally held on 14 December 2025, covering 13.6 million registered voters across the state (Akashvani News 2025).
