In 2002 General Elections, electronic voting machines were used in three constituencies. After this test run, there were many debates about the security and the costs of introducing e-voting in the whole country. Eventually in 2009, the Minister for the Environment, John Gormley, announced that "the electronic voting system was to be scrapped, due to cost and the public's dissatisfaction with it".
