International IDEA honors the memory of democracy advocate Hamid Khalafallah
Hamid was a Programme Officer in International IDEA’s Sudan Office for many years. Hamid was a dedicated advocate for democracy and a passionate believer in Sudan’s potential for a peaceful and prosperous future. His unwavering commitment to integrity and professional inquiry set a high standard for all who worked with him. Through his thoughtful analysis and principled stance, he consistently championed the voices of Sudanese civil society in the pursuit of accountable governance and human rights.
Hamid’s work embodied a profound dedication to building a better Sudan. As a researcher, policy analyst and advocate, he approached complex challenges with rigor and intellectual honesty, always prioritizing evidence-based solutions over expediency. His integrity was evident in every interaction, earning him the respect of colleagues and partners alike. He remained steadfast in his belief that a democratic transition, led by civilians and rooted in inclusive dialogue, was not only possible but essential for Sudan’s future.
In his recent efforts leading up to the April 2026 International Conference on Sudan in Berlin, Hamid played a key role in mobilizing Sudanese civil society initiatives. He contributed to an open letter from independent Sudanese groups calling for an end to the war, the protection of civilians and the advancement of a Sudanese-owned political process. His contributions helped amplify civilian perspectives at this critical moment, underscoring his enduring commitment to peace and democratic renewal in his homeland. Hamid’s legacy will continue to inspire our work at International IDEA as we strive to support democratic institutions in Sudan and beyond. International IDEA remains committed to honouring Hamid’s memory by working towards a democratic future for Sudan. May he rest in peace.
