Statement from the Secretary-General: Earthquake in Nepal

PUBLISHED:
25/04/2015

Our thoughts at this time are with the people of Nepal, India and Bangladesh affected by the earthquake that struck northwest of Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu. The full extent of the damage and casualties is still unknown, and strong aftershocks are expected.

While we are thankful that our colleagues at the International IDEA Office in Kathmandu are all safe and accounted for, we would like to express our heartfelt condolences to those who lost their family and friends as the reports estimate a significant loss of life, as well as injuries.

International IDEA has been in Nepal since 2007 to support Nepal’s constitution building and electoral reform processes. We stand in solidarity with the people of Nepal as they face the aftermath of this natural disaster. Where feasible, we will cooperate with the Nepal government, civil society organizations and the UN agencies in the recovery efforts.
