At the 56th Meeting of the International IDEA Board of Advisers held on 11-12 June 2018, Ms Emine Bozkurt was elected as Chair of the Board of Advisers. The former Member of the European Parliament will lead a group of eminent personalities and experts in electoral processes, constitution building, political participation, conflict management, peace building and gender and inclusion.

Cognizant of the changing political landscape, where democracy and its principles are challenged and undermined, Ms Bozkurt as Chair will work closely with the Board in supporting democracy worldwide through International IDEA’s initiatives and activities. Ms Bozkurt highlighted that ‘In general democracy has advanced worldwide, still there is democratic backsliding in many regions and countries through global challenges such as conflict, populism, inequalities, the unchecked influence of money in politics or corruption. I look forward to cooperate closely with my colleagues in the Board, the Council of Member States, the Secretariat and all relevant actors to make our contribution to the global democracy agenda.

The Board of Advisers assists the organization by enhancing the quality and impact of its programmes. Members of the Board of Advisers serve in their personal capacities and not as representatives of governments or organizations. Ms Bozkurt joined the Board as a member in 2014.
