The 23rd KPI Congress, 2021: Democracy in a New Landscape

Dr Kevin Casas-Zamora, Secretary-General of International IDEA, has been invited to the 23rd KPI Congress 2021: Democracy in a new landscape. The Congress will be held online and coordinated from Thailand, 5-7 November 2021, and it will have the participation of prestigious leaders and regional experts.

Casas-Zamora will deliver his speech on Friday 5 November, between 16:00 and 17:30 hrs. (UTC+7) in the context of the panel entitled "Democracy amidst Changes: The Comparative Perspectives, among invited panellists, are Prof. Dr Mark R. Thompson, Prof. Dr Youngho Cho and Dr Philips J. Vermonte.

The general objectives of the event are to be a public forum for sharing knowledge and experience, and presenting research on the changing landscape of Thailand’s democracy; and present trends or directions, and provide proposals for Thailand’s democratic development in a new landscape.

 

ACTIVITIES

The 23 rd KPI Congress consists of three main activities:

 1) Keynote speeches

        1.1) Thai keynote speech: The speaker will present views on the progression and contextual changes that affect Thailand’s democracy.

        1.2) International keynote speech: The speaker will present views on the recent changes of democracy, and likely directions, as well as how to achieve a balance between traditional democracy and people’s well-being, and the security, economic, and social concerns of the state.

2) Academic discussions

    2.1) International panel discussion: The international panel discussion aims to share information about the changes in democracy at global, regional, and domestic levels, from international perspectives.

    2.2) Thai panel discussion: The Thai panel discussion aims to address the various factors that affect Thailand’s democracy, and propose how to design political institutions and relationships in a new landscape.

3) Group discussions

Group discussions are sharing and discussion sessions on presenting of articles, academic papers, research, experience and perspectives on democracy landscape and related topics. These are some of the topics:

- Group 1. Social Phenomena and Changes in Political Parties

- Group 2. The Legitimacy of Political Institutions in the Midst of Social Volatility

- Group 3. Judicial Activism: Judicature in Political Cases

- Group 4. Governance and Crisis Management
