The Report’s recommendations, including on adapting the EU’s narrative on democracy to the changing geopolitical landscape, received acclaim at no fewer than 15 key EU forums dealing with human rights, development, security and external policies. The Swedish Presidency of the Council of the EU and International IDEA convened in Strömsborg, Sweden, 57 EU representatives from 27 member states to explore ways to better showcase and promote democracy as a universal aspiration.

‘Defending democracy and the rule of law is one of Sweden’s priorities for its Presidency. The Report can be an important contribution to discussions on how the EU can strengthen its work for democracy in foreign and development policy.’

— Diana Janse, Swedish State Secretary to the Minister for International Development Cooperation and Foreign Trade.
