The President of the Republic is elected for seven (7) Years by direct universal suffrage. He can be re-elected once. The President of the Republic is elected by an absolute majority of the votes cast. If it is not obtained in the first round, a second round is held on the second Sunday following the proclamation of the results by the Constitutional Court. Only two candidates with the greatest number of Votes in the first round will proceed. In the second round, the election is won by an absolute majority Of the votes cast.
Prior to 2005, the presidential elections took place under a two round run-off system. However, President Omar Bongo Ondimba managed to win the majority in the first round at every election he contested, thus never having to proceed to the second round.
