Article 257
(1) Where there are grounds for suspicionthat a criminal offence which is subject to prosecution by virtue of office hasbeen committed, the police shall inform the competent State Prosecutor and takenecessary measures as a self-initiative or upon a petition by a StateProsecutor, with a view to discovering the perpetrator, preventing theperpetrator or accomplice from fleeing or hiding, discovering and securingtraces of the criminal offence and items which may serve as evidence, and togathering all information which could be useful for conducting the criminalproceedings successfully. '
