For mandatory referendum: European Union Referendum Act 2015 does not specify whether referendum result will be binding. For optional referendum: "Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act" of 2000 provides the legal framework under which national and/or regional referendums may be held. Nevertheless, parliament must pass a specific law in each instance in order for a referendum to be held. Requirements for referendums may be provided in this specific law. In the case of the United Kingdom alternative vote referendum, the results of the referendum was binding, as it was clearly indicated in the Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Act 2011 (Article 8).
