This lecture marks the first event in the Stockholm Series of Public Lectures on Climate Change and Democracy. This new initiative is a cooperation between renowned Stockholm-based institutions with a particular focus on climate change and democracy from different perspectives. It aims to inform, inspire, and engage experts and the general public alike by providing high-profile public lectures on the interlinkages between climate change and democracy followed by debate.

Serving as the founding Secretary-General of International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance, Bengt Säve-Söderbergh played a key role in establishing International IDEA in February 1995. During his tenure as the first Secretary-General from 1995-2002, he positioned the Institute at the forefront of electoral assistance, gender equality, and democracy support.
On 22 April 2024, the 50/50 Group Sierra Leone, with support from International IDEA held a National Level Dialogue to share findings from a post-election gender audit conducted on the 2023 elections.
The Political Parties Regulation Commission, with support from the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) has started a district level training of political parties on the use and implementation of the intra-party dispute resolution guide. This Discussion Paper reviews the performance of 16 lobbying registers according to 3 interlinked dimensions: (a) transparency; (b) regulatory capacity; and (c) interoperability. Under ‘transparency’, the paper examines the scope of lobbying information collected by the register in question, as well as how that information is administered and subsequently disclosed.
On 1 December 2023, International IDEA’s Council of Member States, chaired by the Netherlands, unanimously approved a membership request from France. The country joins the intergovernmental organization as its 35th Member State.
