Can democracy keep pace with a world on the move? 

International IDEA is organising and convening,  a High-Level Dialogue on “Re-imagining Democracy in Africa: Comparative Experiences from the Global South," together with the African Union, Open Society Foundations, Switzerland’s Federal Department of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and the Department of International Cooperation and Relations (DIRCO) of the Government of South Africa, on 19–20 Jun

Electoral processes are conducted in increasingly challenging environments. The Stockholm Conference on Electoral Integrity will serve as an opportunity for policy dialogue between electoral management bodies (EMBs) and electoral stakeholders, emphasising EMB leadership and independence in complex regulatory questions.  

The Africa and West Asia Electoral Process Programme of International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), in collaboration with the African Union (AU) is organizing a reflection and technical meeting on electoral processes in Africa. The meeting will take place from April 9th to 12th April 2025, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

On April, 3 and April, 4, International IDEA’s Democracy Assessment team will provide training in the State of Democracy (SoD) assessment framework for the Institute of Governance Reform (IGR) in Sierra Leone, and its data collectors, as well as members of the National Commission for Democracy (NCD) and the assessment’s technical sub-committee.

International IDEA's Democracy Assessment Unit is hosting a discussion event on Thursday, 3 April 2025, aimed at exploring how strategic foresight can help shape democratic futures. 

Women are often marginalised from decision-making in conflict and transitional contexts. Despite evidence that women’s presence and participation lead to better and longer lasting outcomes for peace, they remain underrepresented in transitional governments and peacebuilding bodies.

The UN has identified Gender-based violence (GBV) against women as one of the most severe human rights violations across the world. Despite the scale and scope of GBV incidents, survivors who seek help through formal or informal justice sector channels, continue to navigate numerous challenges in doing so. According to the Nigeria Demographic and Health Survey 2018 (NDHS), 31 percent of girls and women aged 15-49 years have experienced physical or sexual violence at least once in their lives

The UNDP Regional Service Centre for Africa, in partnership with International IDEA, will convene a policy dialogue in Addis Ababa to examine and explore ways to make elections more meaningful to African citizens beyond the ballot. 

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) is organising a Regional Dialogue on Advancing Transformative Gender Social Norms to Enhance Women and Youth Participation and Representation in Leadership and Decision-Making and a National Intergenerational Dialogue on Advancing Youth Participation and Representation in Leadership and Decision-Making in cooperation with UN Women.

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) is partnering with the African Union (AU) on the implementation of this activity, within the framework of its MOU with the African Union Commission (AUC). International IDEA is providing technical and financial support through the EU-funded Strengthening Pan-African Capacities for Electoral Observation and Assistance (SPEC) project.

As part of the operationalization of the Regional Mechanism on Support to Inclusive Constitutional Transitions (RMSICT), International IDEA is organizing – in partnership with the Government of Kenya and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), its 3rd Annual Retreat for African Regional Economic Communities (RECs) Special Envoys and High Officials in Nairobi, Kenya from 29 to 31 October 2024.

Helping parliaments evaluate their performance and strengthen democratic governance through data-driven assessment tools will be in focus at the AGORA Community of Practice Workshop on "Measuring Parliaments’ Effectiveness within Democracy", held online on 23 October 2024, from 14:00 to 16:15 CEST.

Climate change is one of the defining challenges of our time, which will determine the fate of coming generations on our planet. Climate action since the 2015 Paris Agreement shows that while solutions are available, neither ambition nor implementation are progressing at the required pace. Democratic institutions must adapt not only to protect societies and the environment, but also since climate change poses an existential risk to democracy.

Hosted by Human Rights Watch, this panel will explore how economic inequality fuels social unrest and the weakening of democratic institutions. Featuring former heads of state and civil society leaders, this event aims to identify actionable strategies to address economic injustices while promoting democratic governance.

International IDEA in collaboration with Southern Africa Resources Watch (SARW) is organising a technical roundtable on the geopolitics of Africa's critical mineral resources in Lusaka, Zambia from 29 to 30 August 2024.

Within the framework of their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), the Electoral Commissions’ Forum of SADC Countries (ECF SADC) is collaborating with the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) to organize the 12th New Commissioners’ Orientation (NCO) Programme, that will be hosted by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ), in Lusaka, Zambia from August 27-29, 2024.

International IDEA will host a Regional Workshop on Electoral Risk Management for Election Management Bodies (EMBs) on August 26-27, 2024, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
