Sudan is known for its harsh weather—especially during the summer in the period between May and July. This year the people of Sudan received a reminder about global warming when temperatures reached a record high of 53 degree Celsius. This report presents elements of the development of Sudanese women’s political participation through time. It highlights several political routes from their early days until the contemporary era. The study is based on an analysis of secondary sources alongside empirical data derived from four states within Sudan, namely: Blue Nile, Central Darfur, Kassala and River Nile.
Political parties are considered gatekeepers for women’s access to political positions, as they play an important role in institutionalizing women’s inclusion in politics. Ensuring that political parties in Sudan play an active role in the advancement of gender equality and the enhancement of women’s political participation is particularly important as Sudan prepares for its transition to democracy.

In October 2020, the Juba Agreement for Peace in Sudan was signed by Sudan’s transitional government and by many of the country’s main warring factions. The Agreement is highly complex and covers a wide range of areas, including governance, security and transitional justice and is intended to inform the future constitutional negotiation process.

This post looks at emergency law responses to the Covid-19 pandemic in conflict-affected states in transition. While some type of emergency response to Covid-19 has been used in most states, we suggest that conflict ‘fault lines’ can mean that emergency law responses have a capacity to undermine transitions.
