This lecture marks the first event in the Stockholm Series of Public Lectures on Climate Change and Democracy. This new initiative is a cooperation between renowned Stockholm-based institutions with a particular focus on climate change and democracy from different perspectives. It aims to inform, inspire, and engage experts and the general public alike by providing high-profile public lectures on the interlinkages between climate change and democracy followed by debate.

Sudan is one of the most diverse countries. A country with more than 70 spoken languages and more than 500 ethnic tribes with diverse cultures and social interests. This diversity has plagued the country with never-ending conflicts. A careful analysis of the determinants of civil wars and fragile democracy in Sudan attempts to point to a more complex picture in the country.
International IDEA is convening a round table to facilitate discussions on democratization in Africa, looking specifically at emerging trends in political transitions, electoral integrity and civic participation as three key areas for addressing the future of democracy in Africa. The event will also present the findings and recommendations on popular uprisings in Africa and the responses of the African Union (AU) and regional institutions to transitions emanating from such uprisings.

The third-panel discussion under the “Anticipating Elections in Fiji” series will be on the topic: Candidates and the Elections. This panel discussion will discuss how to become an effective candidate in the upcoming General Election and how to fundraise for the election.

Since, Fiji has reduced the district magnitude to one which is one whole nation constituency under the Open List Proportional Representation system, it has affected the way campaigning is done in Fiji. This in turn has affected the ballot design.

The recently updated International IDEA’s Global State of Democracy Indices now cover the period from period from 1975 until 2020. The Indices provide information on 116 democratic indicators for 165 countries. For the first time, democracy data from Fiji is included in the study.
