During his visit to President Bernardo Arévalo, Kevin Casas-Zamora presented the work of International IDEA in Latin America and the Caribbean. They exchanged perspectives on the challenges of democracy in the region and, particularly, in Guatemala, identifying synergies for strengthening democratic institutions, and agreeing on the relevance of Electoral reform.

On 6 February 2023, with a nine-hour interval, two earthquakes measuring 7.8 and 7.5 on the Richter scale struck southern Türkiye. The earthquakes struck approximately four months before the country’s 2023 presidential and legislative elections.
With nearly 2 billion voters expected to head to the polls, 2024 has been dubbed a ‘super election year’. In fact, over the next 12 months, more than 70 countries will head to a presidential, legislative, or subnational election. Among them are seven out of ten of the world’s most populous countries, including India, the United States, Indonesia, Pakistan, Russia, and Mexico. Similarly, in South Asia, five out of its eight countries have held/are also planning to hold elections in 2024.
