Presidential Leadership Council retakes Aden and consolidates control over southern Yemen
On 7 January, forces aligned with Yemen's internationally recognized Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) regained control of Aden from the Southern Transitional Council (STC), which had exercised de facto authority over the city since 2019. The development followed escalating tensions between the PLC and the STC after the latter expanded its influence in parts of southern and eastern Yemen in late 2025. By restoring PLC control over the country's interim capital, the move strengthened the PLC's position within government-controlled areas while reducing the influence of the STC, a key advocate of greater autonomy for southern Yemen. The development may affect future governance arrangements in southern Yemen.
Update: On 6 February, the internationally recognized government announced the formation of a new cabinet headed by Prime Minister Shaya Mohsin al-Zindani.
