On 3 January, US forces struck Caracas multiple times and an elite special forces unit seized Venezuela’s leader, Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores. The couple were transported to the US to face narco-terrorism charges in court, according to an indictment shared by Attorney General Pam Bondi. In a press conference, President Trump said the United States would ‘run’ Venezuela. Democratic Party members, experts and international allies criticized the operation as being contrary to international law and lacking congressional authorization.
