Solomon Islands - May 2026

Prime Minister Manele ousted in confidence vote after lengthy standoff

On 7 May 2026, Solomon Islands Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele lost a parliamentary vote of no confidence by 26 votes to 22 after months of coalition fragmentation, ministerial resignations, and disputes over governance and accountability. Manele had refused to convene parliament for nearly two months in an attempt to prevent the vote, precipitating a potential constitutional crisis. However, he complied with a 1 May Court of Appeal ruling that he either resign or convene parliament by 7 May. Parliament elected Matthew Wale his successor on 15 May.
