Parliament considers constitutional amendment bill amid debate over executive powers
On 26 January, Parliament held a pre-legislative consultation bringing together lawmakers, government officials, civil society organizations and other stakeholders to review proposed constitutional amendments before formal parliamentary debate. Part of a long-running constitutional review process, the key provisions include: Parliament's proposed power to remove a President or Vice-President who loses party membership, restrictions on the powers of an outgoing President during transition periods, the creation of a Search and Nomination Committee to identify electoral authorities, Proportional Representation (PR) as the permanent system for parliamentary elections, reduction of the threshold for a first-round presidential victory to 50 per cent plus one vote, and requirement for political parties to ensure at least 30 per cent of nominees for national and local elections are women.
