Former president Luis Arce is charged with corruption-related crimes
On 10 December, former president Luis Arce was arrested and charged with corruption-related offences, including influence peddling, unlawful enrichment, and dereliction of duty. The charges brought by the Prosecutor relate to Arce’s previous role as Economy Minister and allege that he misappropriated funds from the Fund for Indigenous Development that had been earmarked for development projects. An anti-corruption judge ordered Arce to five months of preventive pre-trial detention. The new administration of President Rodrigo Paz has announced extensive investigations into alleged acts of corruption committed during the past 20 years of Movimiento al Socialismo rule, including through the establishment of ‘truth commissions’.
