Lawyers launch nationwide strike over legal profession reform
On 15 June, lawyers launched a nationwide strike against a bill reforming the legal profession after months of stalled negotiations. Protestors argued that the proposed legislation would weaken the independence of the legal profession and bar associations, and objected to its advancement without broader agreement within the sector. The dispute escalated throughout the month, culminating in a large demonstration outside Parliament in Rabat on 29 June, after a parliamentary committee advanced the bill. The protest was backed by all 17 bar associations in the country, whose presidents threatened to resign collectively if the legislation was adopted, underscoring the breadth of opposition within the legal profession.
Update: The law entered into force on 20 August. Lawyers continued their strike which, as of September, remained ongoing.
