Afghanistan - October 2025

Taliban blocks social media platforms

The Taliban Ministry of Communications and Information Technology told the BBC Afghan service on 8 October that it had blocked some content on Facebook, Instagram, X and other unnamed platforms. The decision has not otherwise been formally announced, and officials did not specify the purpose for or the breadth of the internet blockages. Local users reached by journalists said internet access to major platforms was limited and videos and pictures did not load. The block began a week after all internet and telecommunications were disabled in the country for 48 hours, again without any official explanation. However, some Taliban officials had previously cited the need to prevent online contact between men and women and access to pornography as justification for limiting internet access.
