The Office of International IDEA to the EU celebrates International Day of Democracy 2017

The Office of International IDEA to the EU is co-organizing a conference in celebration of the International Day of Democracy in Brussels, on 27 September 2017. The event, entitled, “Democracy in a changing world”, is hosted by the President of the European Parliament, Antonio Tajani, and co-organized by the European Commission, the European External Action Service, European Endowment for Democracy (EED), the European Network of Political Foundations (ENoP), and the European Partnership for Democracy (EPD). It will take place on Wednesday, 27 September 2017, 10:30-17:30 at the European Parliament, followed by a cultural event at the BOZAR Centre for Fine Arts.     

The conference will provide an opportunity to reflect on the global state of democracy and democratic trends, the challenge of ensuring democratic engagement of citizens, and the role of the media in supporting democracy.  Panels will be composed of high level officials, practitioners and academics, with a focus on three main themes: State of democracy today: trends and challenges ; How to bring the demos back into democracy? ; and Democracy and media. The cultural event at the BOZAR Centre of Fine Arts will start with a Keynote Address on “EU and democracy: a never ending task” by Herman Van Rompuy, President Emeritus of the European Council. The Arab Puppet Theatre's play "Performance Desperately in Need of an Audience”, will conclude the celebration of Democracy Day.
