Since the Maidan revolution of 2014, Ukraine has embarked on an ambitious decentralisation process that will see more governance responsibilities be transferred to the local level in years to come. On 13 December therefore, International IDEA presented its ‘State of Local Democracy Assessment in Ukraine’.

For democracies to thrive, a vibrant and actively engaged citizenry and civil society are essential. Civil society can monitor and hold the state to account, it can infuse a greater diversity of voices into the policy process, and it can act as a force for democratic reform or provide resistance to democratic backsliding.
In today’s world, it is impossible to imagine the further European Integration of Ukraine without at least also considering the harmonization of its legislation to that of Europe. This includes the coordination of joint EU-Ukraine activities in the realm of cyber security. This was the topic of a panel on “Security Threats in Cyber space.
