Our work in Mexico and Central America focuses on providing impartial expertise, training and technical assistance on electoral integrity and electoral reform. In particular, we support electoral institutions on a number of topics including electoral systems, electoral dispute resolution, political financing, electoral justice and election administration.

This includes promoting dialogues, consultation, capacity building and development of knowledge resources that include the latest research and practices in democracy and elections from all over the world.

In 2017, the Mexican government and International IDEA signed an agreement for establishing a sub-regional office in the country. The office opened its doors in April 2018 and will allow supporting national capacities and strengthening democratic processes. Our enhanced presence also will provide a platform for knowledge exchange and discussion.

In 2019, the sub-regional office will provide technical assistance to the Electoral Tribunal of Panama (Tribunal Electoral de Panamá). The main objective of the collaboration is to strengthen the Tribunal’s institutional capacities, especially those needed to implement the electoral reform of 2017.
