EU Office (Brussels)

Brexit: An opportunity for democracy

The people of the United Kingdom have spoken. In many ways, and for years to come, Brexit will have a profound impact on the United Kingdom, the European Union and the rest of the world.

The mission of the Office of International IDEA to the European Union is to represent our country programmes and knowledge resources on democracy before influential institutions and to try to impact their decision-making.

In the EU, our primary goals are strengthening political parties for improved democratic governance and addressing the question of how to recapture the energy of our young citizens, so that they can play an increasingly important role in democratic processes.

Country & Regional Support

The European Union aims to protect and advance democracy and human rights both within and outside its borders.

The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights outlines binding rules to all EU member states while all agreements on trade or cooperation with non-EU countries include a human rights clause stipulating that human rights are central to relations with the EU.
