International IDEA and Community of Democracies strengthen cooperation for the promotion and support of democracy

International IDEA and the Permanent Secretariat of the Community of Democracies (PSCD) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen their cooperation in promoting and supporting democracy. This agreement formalizes and strengthens the long-standing successful cooperation between the two organizations and provides the working framework for inter-institutional dialogue and further cooperation.

The Community of Democracies  and International IDEA will work closer together on a range of areas of mutual interest including: developing initiatives focused on the critical link between democracy and development, promoting inclusive participation in democratic processes, supporting initiatives focused on the protection of civic space, and promoting dialogue on the implementation of international democratic instruments. To date, International IDEA and the Community of Democracies has implemented joint projects in the margins of the Inter-Regional Dialogue of Democracy on issues of Gender Equality and Political Empowerment of Women, and on the overarching theme of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and the Sustainable Development Goals framework, with a particular focus on SDG 5,16 and 17.

The agreement was signed on 30 November 2018, in Stockholm, Sweden, by the Secretary-General of International IDEA, Yves Leterme, and the Secretary General of the Community of Democracies, Thomas E. Garrett.
