June 11, 2015

On Wednesday, 10 June, representatives of International IDEA's 28 Member States met in Stockholm for the 8th Extraordinary Session of the Council. The Council of Member States is the governing body of the organization.

Following International IDEA’s Statutes, the Council sets the overall strategic direction for the organization’s work, reviews the progress of the organization in meeting its objectives, approves the annual programme and budget, and considers requests by new Member States to join the organization.

The Council meeting on 10 June was chaired by Switzerland as the Chair of the Council of Member States in 2015. Among the agenda items discussed were updates on the operational and financial situation of International IDEA, based on the Annual Results Report 2014, reports from the Steering Committee, Board of Advisers and the Finance and Audit Committee; the follow-up of the recommendations of the Mid-Term Strategy Review concluded in 2014; and the plans for the 20th anniversary of International IDEA.

The Council Members also heard a presentation on the Varieties of Democracy Institute (V-Dem) policy research and cooperation with International IDEA.
