International IDEA film investigates social media's role in political finance and voter participation

Money is central to politics and critical for communicating with constituents. Money can also have a serious impact on fair political participation and competition. Problems abound, and scandals involving corrupt politicians, questionable alliances between wealthy donors and politicians, vote buying, and the influence of money from organized crime all contribute to the degradation of an equal playing field.

In recent elections around the world, social media has emerged as a powerful tool in the battle to level the playing field. Political candidates and political parties are using social media for several purposes, including fundraising.

Power in our Pockets: Social Media, Money and Politics in the Digital Age, a film by the International IDEA, explores how social media is affecting elections. The film's diverse examples from Indonesia, Spain and the United States show how communication between political parties and voters is changing.

International IDEA invites you to a news conference to find out more about the positive uses and misuses of social media in political financing, broadening public participation and promoting increased transparency in elections.
