Women play major roles as decision-makers and leaders advancing peace and prosperity around the world. Yet progress on women’s political representation has been slow and uneven.

Only 22 countries have women in the highest position of political power and only 25 per cent of national parliamentarians are women. Barriers to women’s meaningful participation abound, including traditional gender roles, biases, and norms about who holds positions of power.

International IDEA's Senior Advisor for Democracy and Inclusion, Rumbidzai Kandawasvika-Nhundu, will participate in the discussion on how we can advance women’s meaningful political participation, build pipelines of future women leaders, and sustain support for gender equality. Government and civil society leaders will share lessons learned and best practices for breaking the barriers to accelerate women’s inclusion that can be scaled to better serve women worldwide.

Featuring:

  • The Hon. Julia Gillard, Former Prime Minister of Australia
  • Ms Ikram Ben Said, Founder, Aswat Nissa, Tunisia
  • Ms Laura Alonso, Former Head of the Argentina Anti-Corruption Office
  • Ms Rumbidzai Kandawasvika-Nhundu, Senior Advisor for Democracy and Inclusion, International IDEA

  • Ambassador Melanne Verveer, Executive Director, Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security
  • Dr Jeni Klugman, Lead Author of "Beijing+25: Accelerating Progress for Women and Girls" and Managing Director, Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security

Hosted by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security, in partnership with the Georgetown Ambassadors for Women, Peace and Security, this is the fourth panel of a five-part virtual event series on how to advance gender equality. The series draws on findings from a groundbreaking report by the Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security (GIWPS) and The Rockefeller Foundation, "Beijing+25: Accelerating Progress for Women and Girls."
