Since 2000, SoD assessments have been undertaken in no less than 20 countries around the world. The first generation assessments (pilot assessments) were conducted in Bangladesh; El Salvador; Italy; Kenya; Malawi; New Zealand, South Korea and Peru. These countries represent different regions of the world—demonstrating SoD’s universal applicability.
Since the framework is developed as a global public good it has been independently picked and applied by a diversity of actors around the world to assess the quality of their democracies. The second generation assessments have been conducted in Australia, Ireland, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Latvia; South Asia--covering, India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka; Central Asia—covering-- Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan and is also currently being undertaken in Mexico.
The launch of the revised SoD methodology (Assessing the Quality of Democracy, 2008) will be the starting point for a third generation assessments as these assessments will be using the revised methodology.
