Areas of work: The Global Justice Center (GJC) envisions a world where human rights guarantees are routinely enforced and all people have full access to national and international justice mechanisms. In order to accomplish this, the GJC reaches out to the key players in transitional and emerging democracies, specifically women, to make sure that they are well equipped to advocate for progressive reform. The GJC’s work covers two critical areas to help bring about this vision: The first consists of seeking out opportunities to build sustainable infrastructure for women's rights in transitional and post-conflict democracies. The second includes our ongoing efforts within the UN and globally to strengthen and interpret existing human rights statutes and support the development of international justice bodies. The GJC’s programmatic work centers on finding strategic ways to utilize human rights treaties, as well as the energy and knowledge of women’s groups on the ground, so that the laws that exist on paper are translated into concrete change for women that can be felt in their everyday lives. The key legal tools utilized by the GJC are: The Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW); Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace, and Security; and the International Criminal Court. These legal tools are used to: Bridge the divide between transitional justice, domestic law reform, violence against women, and women’s empowerment; encourage strategic litigation to enforce women’s rights and strengthen international law; provide ongoing legal advice and support to emerging women’s groups and leaders; develop new avenues for seeking justice through International Court Systems; and emphasize the importance of women in the judiciary and encouraging judicial activism. The GJC currently has projects in the Middle East and North Africa Region, and Southeast Asia, and also plans to expand to Latin America and Central Asia in the next year.

Title: Legal Advocacy

Partners:

  • International Coalition for Gender Justice in Iraq (ICGJI)
  • Women's Alliance for a Democratic Iraq (WAFDI)
  • NGO Working Group on Women, Peace and Security

Project description:
The Global Justice Center makes an active effort to reach out to other NGOs, lawyers, and judges in the field in order to assure that all are aware of the legal tools available to advance women's rights domestically using international tools. As a result, the GJC is currently partnering with other NGOs to submit an Amicus Curiae (friend of the court) Brief to the Iraq High Tribunal; has become a member of the NGO Working Group on Women, Peace and Security; and conducts numerous presentations at universities and bar associations.

Title: Public Education

Project description:
The Global Justice Center is committed to public advocacy and outreach on women's rights issues. In addition to launching a new website in October of 2006, we have also used other eCommunications technologies to send out monthly e-News Bulletins to the over 1,000 email-list subscribers who are interested in women's rights. Also, the GJC periodically conducts media outreach, consisting of issuing press releases and op-ed pieces; has compiled a collection of pilot training materials on international women's rights law in Arabic and English which has been utilized by other NGOs looking to do similar trainings; and has created a CEDAW Casebank which brings together over 100 cases that have used CEDAW in their opinions.
