Areas of work:

Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI) is an independent, non-profit research institution and a major international centre in policy-oriented and applied development research. Founded in 1930, CMI is the largest centre for development studies in Scandinavia. The geographical focus is Sub-Saharan Africa, Southern and Central Asia, the Middle East and Latin America.

CMI is committed to a balance between theoretical and applied research. Research focuses on development and human rights issues and on international conditions that affect them. CMI research assists policy formulation, improves the basis for decision-making and promotes public debate on international development issues.

CMI’s main thematic research areas are:
  • Rights and Development
  • Conditions for Poverty Reduction
  • States and Societies under Stress
  • Public Sector Reform

CMI employs 40 social scientists, primarily political scientists, economists and social anthropologists. Most CMI researchers have substantial experience from developing countries or international organisations.

CMI has close institutional collaboration with the University of Bergen and the Norwegian School of Economics and Business Administration, which includes teaching, joint research and support to graduate students and PhD candidates. CMI staff also form part of extensive international networks, and CMI has formal co-operation agreements with various research institutions in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. Institutional co-operation facilitates joint research and projects, institutional development and competence building.

CMI has two report series, CMI Report (R) and CMI Working Paper (WP), and publishes CMIBriefs.
