Areas of work: AIHRC has been mandated by the Afghan Constitution and the Law on the Structure, Duties and Mandate of AIHRC to monitor the human rights situation in Afghanistan, and to promote and protect human rights throughout the country. The Commission covers the Afghan territory through eight regional and three provincial offices.
AIHRC has eight program units to fulfill its objectives:
- The Investigation and Monitoring unit through which the Commission receives and investigates human rights violations complaints from the people of Afghanistan
- The Transitional Justice, which documents and records past HR violations and implement a conflict mapping project
- The Women's Rights unit, which is active in promoting and protecting Women's Rights
- The Child Rights unit, which promotes and protects Child Rights, conducts educational workshops for children and adults, and monitors Child Correction Centers, orphanages, Kindergartens and schools
- The Human Rights Education Unit, which conducts workshops and provides human rights education material to all, including posters, brochures and films
- The People With Disabilities unit, which is active in the promotion and protection of the rights of disabled people who are deprived of their rights
- The Media unit, which provides Radio and TV programs broadcast through national TVs and radio stations throughout the country. 12,000 copies of a magazine covering human rights topics and issues are published every month.
- The Research Unit, which undertakes researches on human rights related issues, with the objective to find the roots of human rights violations and to provide clear recommendations to the people and government of Afghanistan.
The AIHRC regional offices are located in Kabul, Kandahar, Mazar, Kunduz, Bamyan, Hirat, Ningarhar, and Gardiz. The AIHRC provincial offices are located in Badakhshan, Maimana, and Daikundi.
