AfP is a non-profit, non-partisan and non-government organisation working for a peaceful and democratic Nepal. A group of students and youth, seeking peace in a country being torn apart by violence and conflict, established the organisation in 2002. Today, AfP involves professionals, student political leaders and concerned youth. To this end AfP works to educate its constituency on the context of good governance and the fulfillment of human rights through advocacy, discussion forums and capacity building workshops. Since its inception, the Alliance has worked with a broad range of students and youths on programs relating to democratization, good governance, human rights, transitional justice, peacebuilding and conflict transformation. It has initiated projects with various other donors, namely The Embassy of Finland in Kathmandu, Danida HUGOU, the Asia Foundation, MS Nepal and USAID/OTI. AfP works across the country, covering almost all the districts in Nepal.

Title: Empowering Youth for Sustainable Peace and Democracy

AfP conducted a six- months training series with six training days per month in five different colleges, each representing one development region. Participants were taught democratic values, transparent policies and accountability of electoral processes in relation to student unions; and received leadership training with a focus on practical application of democratic principles. After the completion of the training, the participants formed a Mini Youth Constituent Assembly (MYCA) in Kathmandu and worked for eight days to promulgate a Constitution. This Constitution is a true representation of the aspirations and recommendations of the youth of Nepal.

AfP partnered with local NGO’s to help establish Youth Peace Centers in each of these districts which will continue to work on these issues at the community level.

Title: Trans-Partisan Youth Forums for Democracy

Partners:
The Asia Foundation

Project description:

Trans-partisan Youth Forums for Democracy” brought together youth with local political leaders to discuss, debate, and propose solutions to major issues facing youth and their communities. These forums brought youth into contact with current and future government leaders to talk about the role of youth and local and national government, presented challenges and worked out solutions, encouraged action for youth to participate in decision-making processes. They gave youth a better sense of their civic rights and responsibilities and made government leaders more aware of the priorities and contributions of youth.

Title: Youth Voter Education and Outreach

Project description:

Since a high majority of youth in Nepal is either illiterate or unaware of their rights, duties and obligations as citizens of a democracy, or indifferent to it, this group may not effectively exercise the CA elections to the fullest and most youth related issues would be ignored during the constitution making process. With this perspective Alliance for Peace launched special education campaigns "Youth Voter Education and Outreach" highlighting the fact that youth have the right to vote and their participation in the Constituent Assembly election is important to decide the future of the country.
