Description
As Bolivia emerges from a period of political upheaval in which protests forced two presidents to step down, the country’s leaders are seeking ways to strengthen political representation in the country.
This workshop report shares experiences in political party-building from several Latin American countries and aims to further strengthening the representative system in Bolivia. The international workshop, co-organized by International IDEA and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), held in La Paz, Bolivia in July 2007, brought together political analysts and party leaders from Brazil, Uruguay, Mexico, Chile and Colombia to share their experiences on the development of political organizations in those countries with representatives of Bolivian political organizations.
Participants included about 80 representatives of Bolivian political organizations, including the Movimiento al Socialismo (MAS), Movimiento Nacionalista Revolucionario (MNR), Poder Democrático y Social (PODEMOS), Unidad Nacional (UN), Movimiento sin Miedo (MSM), Movimiento Originario Popular (MOP) and Alianza Social (AS).
The workshop was part of the International IDEA and UNDP project for “Renovation and Strengthening of the System of Political Representation in Bolivia,” which is funded by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency.
