An international seminar on the management of hydrocarbons was held between 14 -15 May 2008 in La Paz. At a time when fundamental reforms are being made in the national hydrocarbon sector, it was important to draw on experiences of other countries that have developed solid policies and successful state-run petroleum companies through appropriate institutional design and good governance of the sector.
Bolivia has some of the largest natural gas reserves in Latin America. Hydrocarbon production is one of the government’s main income sources, and good management of those revenues could enable the country to reverse the conditions of poverty and inequality that affect a large part of the population. The seminar was organised jointly by International IDEA and the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Energy.
