This booklet aims to contribute to the debate of women’s political representation in Chile and Latin America in general, where women continue to be underrepresented in parliament. The study presents the methods used to promote an increased level of women’s political participation.
Particular focus is given to the use of gender quotas but also to the role of political parties when selecting candidates as well as the electoral system in use.
An overview of different quotas and their regulation through laws, as well as an evaluation of the effect that gender quotas have in selected countries in Latin America is provided. The study argues for the positive effects that quotas can achieve for increased women’s representation in parliaments.
Este folleto se propone contribuir al debate de la representación política de las mujeres en Chile y América Latina en general.
El estudio analiza diferentes cuotas de género como método para promover la participación política de mujeres, pero también investiga la regulación jurídica de cuotas, el rol de los partidos políticos en la selección de candidatos así como el sistema electoral. El estudio presenta una evaluación del efecto de cuotas de género en América Latina y los efectos positivos de cuotas para aumentar la representación de mujeres en los parlamentos.
