Kathmandu, 21 March 2007 – International IDEA releases a new publication Political Parties in South Asia: The Challenge of Change in Kathmandu, Nepal.
Political Parties in South Asia provides a comparative view of the condition, role and functioning of political parties in five countries of the South Asian region: Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
It summarizes the South Asian political party landscape presently available in social research; builds on the information collected from 50 parties; provides an image of political parties through interviews with party leaders; identifies the challenges parties face; and suggests paths for the future.
The report represents a systematic effort to understand the internal functioning of parties and how external regulations shape parties and party systems.
The launch of Political Parties in South Asia took place as part of a two-day conference (concept note, agenda), 21-22 March 2007 in Kathmandu, Nepal, on the state of political parties in South Asia organized by International IDEA. The aim of the conference was to bring together leading experts to discuss the challenges facing political parties in the region. It was held at a pivotal moment in Nepal’s political development where political parties have emerged as key actors in the peace process. Participants include representatives from political parties, scholars, policy makers, democracy assistance organizations, civil society and the media.
