IDEA participated in a three day event on “The Participation of Women in Politics” (Journada de reflexión sobre la participación política de las mjueres) jointly organised by IDEA, the Organisation of America States (OAS) and the Participation and Democracy Programme (PPD) in Guatemala City.
On 14 November, IDEA held a workshop and book launch of the Spanish version of the handbook Women in Parliament: Beyond Numbers (Mujeres en el Parlamento. Más allá de los números). The aim of the forum was to raise awareness about the obstacles women face en route to parliament, providing options on how to increase the political representation of women and how to effectively influence the political agenda. The forum drew together different experiences of women in politics in the region, and created an opportunity for networking between the participants.
The expert panel presenting the handbook consisted of well recognized researchers and activists including Cecilia Blondet from Perú, Nineth Montenegro, a parliamentarian from Guatemala, Gabriel Aguelera, a Board Member from PPD, Braulia Thillet de Solórzano, Director of Programmes at PPD and and Myriam Méndez Montalvo from International IDEA.
