  International IDEA commemorates International Women's Day on 8 March 2011 along with the rest of the world. This year marks the centenary of dedicating a day exclusively to the celebration of the world's women. In 2011 it should be an occasion to reflect on the milestones in that time towards gender equality and women's empowerment and pay attention to the challenges that remain before women's empowerment is truly realized.

A Women's Day for All Egyptians
 
   
  On International Women's Day 2011, Secretary-General Vidar Helgesen is meeting with a group of women activists in Cairo, Egypt to discuss issues of women's political participation and representation, and related constitutional, electoral and governance reforms.

100 celebrations later, where is Latin America on the road to gender equality in politics?
 
   
  As International Women's Day hits the century mark this year, there was good news for the inclusion of Latin American women in positions of political decision-making. Dilma Rousseff was inaugurated on January 1 President of Brazil after winning the secondround elections with 56 percent of the vote. With her inauguration there is for the first time ever three women presidents serving simultaneously. In addition to Roussef, Cristina Fernández is governing Argentina and Laura Chinchilla is president of Costa Rica.

Women behind Nepal's constitution – a personal story  

The Constituent Assembly of Nepal has an historic number of women in its ranks. The 197 women members (33 percent of the 601-members) include old-time politicians, women activists, professionals, former combatants, war widows, and young women who are political novices. Here is a story of one of the CA members, a story based on her struggle, hopes and perseverance to bring people's democracy and a federal republic to Nepal. It is a story of her journey from the jungle to the politics; a transformation from an oppressed village girl to an elected member of the Legislature.

Women's rights to be incorporated in Nepal's new constitution

The Women's Caucus of the Constituent Assembly (CA) has published its position paper entitled - Women's Rights and Agenda to be incorporated in the New Constitution. The recommendations by women CA members were prepared on the basis of preliminary draft reports and concept papers of the constitutional and thematic committees of the CA. They represent the main agenda of women in the CA on matters which have been overlooked by these working committees.
